Certification and Licensure
Certification is a key step toward becoming a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer. You must pass specific exams to demonstrate your expertise and readiness for the field. Here are the three steps you’ll need to complete:
Step 1: Pass the Sonography Principles & Instrumentation (SPI) Exam
This foundational exam tests your knowledge of ultrasound physics and instrumentation.
Step 2: Pass an ARDMS Specialty Exam
Choose a specialty area such as Abdomen, OB/GYN, or Vascular Sonography, and complete the corresponding certification exam.
Step 3: Become a Certified Diagnostic Medical Sonographer
Once certified, you’ll be recognized as a qualified professional ready to work in healthcare settings.

Sonography Principles & Instrumentation (SPI) Exam
The SPI Exam tests your knowledge of ultrasound physics, instrumentation, and key principles of sonography. It’s the first step to achieving certification and is required for all specialties.
ARDMS Specialty Exam
Choose a specialty area such as Abdomen, OB/GYN, or Vascular Sonography and pass the corresponding ARDMS certification exam to demonstrate your expertise in the field.
Certified Diagnostic Medical Sonographer
Once you pass both exams, you’ll earn the credential of a Certified Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, qualifying you for professional practice in a variety of healthcare settings.
